Navigating New Beginnings Amidst Regulatory Changes and Coaching Triumphs

Hi there,

This year has been a whirlwind of both challenges and opportunities for me. From launching new projects to overcoming setbacks, I have also embarked on an exciting journey as a coach. This marks a new and fulfilling chapter in my life.

Regulatory Changes in California

Recently, the California Department of Justice (DOJ) issued important bulletins that everyone involved in firearms should be aware of. One significant update is the increase in the ammunition background check fee, which has gone up from $1.00 to $5.00, effective July 1. This change affects the standard eligibility check, which pulls data from the AFS. However, it's worth noting that ammunition included in a Dealer's Record of Sale (DROS) is exempt from this fee.

In addition to this fee increase, the DOJ has reaffirmed its ban on Forced Reset Triggers (FRTs). Despite recent federal settlements that may confuse some, FRTs remain illegal in California.

Insights on 80%ers and DIY Firearm Projects

A hot topic these days is the increasing interest in 80% firearms, commonly referred to as "ghost guns."

Recently, a potential customer asked about swapping parts between a "ghost" Glock and an original Glock, and while this is an easy task, I had to turn away the work due to certain obligations dealers and gunsmiths have, namely, we have to serialize any unserialized PMF that walks into the shop, and log it, before we can give it back.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) has set stringent guidelines regarding frames and receivers, and that crosses over into related gunsmithing obligations when it comes to Personally Manufactured Firearms.

I want to reiterate that, until this becomes less burdensome and these over-reactionary regulations go away, I cannot offer assistance when it comes to 80ers, even in the troubleshooting or maintenance departments.

Progress on Securing a Brick-and-Mortar Shop

In previous updates, I mentioned my ongoing efforts to secure a physical shop. This journey has been a blend of excitement and patience. While I cannot share specific details just yet due to partner agreements, I am eager to provide updates soon.

The retail landscape for gun shops is changing, and I want to play a part in it. Having a brick-and-mortar space will allow for direct engagement with fellow enthusiasts, creating a community hub. This physical presence can foster stronger connections and shared learning experiences, and myself and my business partner intend to approach it with that in mind.

Coaching Achievements and Growth

On a brighter note, I am excited to share that I recently obtained my ISSF C License as a rifle coach. This milestone came after a rewarding educational experience with some of the top instructors in the field.

During my training, I explored critical topics such as performance profiling, diverse coaching methods, and effective leadership styles. I even learned nutritional strategies specifically for athletes. These lessons are set to elevate my coaching approach significantly, allowing me better to assist my athletes in reaching their personal goals.

My dedication to coaching extends beyond techniques alone; it includes a holistic focus on athlete well-being. This includes mental health and life balance. I am excited about the tremendous benefits that coaching can offer, and look forward to implementing what I've learned.

Special Coaching Experiences

One of the standout experiences this year was my trip to the 2025 USA Shooting Junior Olympics, where I served as a support coach for one of my athletes. Watching young competitors excel in their events was incredibly inspiring. Assisting the SUHS Huskies during competitions in Talladega and Anniston, Alabama, was also a true honor.

The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm and determination—a clear representation of the spirit of competition. In the coming months, we will head to the CMP National Matches, where I hope to help achieve even more success and share the joy of victory with my athletes.

Reflecting on Growth and Community

As I look back on the various aspects of my experiences this year—from navigating major regulatory changes to achieving personal milestones in coaching—I feel an overwhelming sense of optimism for what lies ahead. Each of these moments of growth, learning, and community building illustrates the positive impacts we can all make.

Remember that every step in your journey provides a chance for growth. Embrace obstacles, celebrate achievements, and keep moving forward.

I am eager to share more updates with you soon. Thank you for being a part of this journey!
